What it is

Periodontal surgery, also known as gum surgery, is a series of treatments performed by a specialist. Such operations are performed when the situation cannot be addressed using a non-surgical approach, such as deep cleaning. The usual forms of gum surgery are:

• Pocket Reduction Surgery (Flap Surgery): The dentist folds a piece of gum tissue back to remove bacteria, hardened plaque (calculus), and damaged bone. The tissue is sutured in position after cleaning, thus decreasing the periodontal pocket depth.
• Bone Grafting: This is an invasive procedure that regenerates lost bone due to disease or injury. A dentist applies natural or artificial bone to hold the teeth together.
• Soft Tissue Grafting (Gum Grafting): This therapy is used to cover the roots of teeth and alleviate sensitivity. It typically involves transplanting healthy gum tissue to another section of the mouth.
• Crown Lengthening: This procedure eliminates excess gum tissue and/or bone, allowing more of the natural tooth to be visible. It is typically performed before the placement of crowns or for cosmetic purposes.
